First showcased at the Delhi Motor Show in Feb this year, Maruti has started real world testing of the S-Cross in the country and this car will come to India to answer the country’s growing appetite for crossovers.

Though the SX4 sedan is on sale in India, Maruti stayed away from the crossover sibling which was available in international markets. However, the new gen SX4 S-Cross has received new found interest from the company’s Indian subsidiary.

Slated to be launched sometime early next year, the crossover has been spotted testing in India for the first time.

Being a crossover with no series intention to go off the road, the S-Cross has a stance of a raised hatchback. Generous proportions, high ground clearance and 16-inch alloy wheels would differentiate it from the recent wannabe-crossover hatchbacks. The black plastic under body cladding, LED daytime running lights and roof rails align the car with latest crossover styling trends.

On the inside, the India-spec version is most likely to sport a dual tone trim with several elements being borrowed from other Maruti cars to keep the cost at bay. The automaker would also load the S-Cross with ample equipment to justify its premium positioning.

Maruti is expected to make some significant modifications to the crossover to make it compatible for Indian conditions. The powertrain option is expected to be the Fiat sourced 1.6-litre MultiJet diesel engine (could be called as 1.6 DDIS in Maruti’s lingo, just like the 1.3 DDIS) that belts out an impressive 118 HP of power and 320 Nm of torque. The engine is expected to be mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. The international model is available with Allgrip all-wheel drive system but it remains to be seen whether Maruti would offer it in India. Maruti might also offer 1.6-litre petrol engine option.

Maruti’s previous attempts at the other side of Rs. 10 lakhs have given the company forgettable experiences but that doesn’t stop the firm from taking a stab yet again. The Maruti Suzuki SX4 S-Cross is expected to be priced between Rs. 9-13 lakh, taking the fight straight towards the Nissan Terrano, Renault Duster, Tata Safari, Mahindra Scorpio and entry level variants of Mahindra XUV500.
